Some Gentle Reminders To Bring Into The New Year đ
'Trust that you are growing, even in the dark.'
Welcome to the Collective World X Thought Catalog Newsletter. Collective World is a one-of-a-kind creative network powered by the minds and voices behind The Thought & Expression Company. Weâre so glad youâre here.
Itâs okay if you arenât excited for the new year. Truth be told, many of us have been through a lot the past few years, and itâs okay if you arenât feeling optimistic about whatâs to come. Thereâs nothing wrong with not wanting to stay up till midnight to toast with champagne or celebrate the night away. Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions 2022 brings out in youâgood, bad, and uglyâbut just be sure to recognize that, contrary to popular belief, this wonât set the tone for the rest of your year. This is just one day out of the next 365. Allow yourself to feel your feelings, and then let them goâand then keep an open mind about whatever comes next.
Itâs okay if you donât feel like youâve made progress this year. Itâs okay if you feel like youâve taken a few too many steps backwards or like youâre not a better version of yourself compared to last year. Itâs okay if you feel like youâre back at square one. The truth is, growth is often subtle, even imperceptible; the ways youâve progressed may not be obvious to you for another few years or so. I hope you can trust that where you are now will become the foundation where you build yourself into the person you want to become. Sometimes you just have to retread old ground to find a new beginning. It doesnât mean youâre failing, it just means youâre getting there.
Itâs okay if you donât know what you want from this year. Itâs okay if you donât have any resolutions or plans. After all, weâve all learned that plans can quickly change and that sometimes the best thing we can do is just go with the flow. Itâs okay if the future just feels like a giant blank slate sometimes. I know how scary that can be. Just remember that a blank slate is also the opportunity to create something unexpected, something beautiful. Sometimes the most wonderful things in life are the ones we never saw coming. Instead of fearing the unknown, I hope you choose to embrace the possibilities.
Remember that no matter what life looks like right now, it wonât be like this forever. The world is constantly changing, and isnât that wonderful? Because just as things end, new things begin. You may not be a new person by January 1, but you will be by December 31. You will grow, and you will heal, and you may lose your way, but you will always find it again. So if you arenât happy with where you are or who you are or what you are doing, have faith that there are beautiful things waiting for you up aheadâyou only need to look for them.
The new year may not be a new start, but itâs a continuation of the story youâve spent your whole life writing. So let go of the expectations, embrace the journey, and trust that youâre one step closer to your happy ending.
What Weâre Reading This Week đđ
âBelieve in yourself. You wonât have all the answers. You wonât be perfect, but thatâs not an indication of failure. You fail when you decide to.â â Arlene Ambrose
âI thought that I needed to have a clean brain before coming back online, but it turned out the prevailing aesthetic was having an empty one. Now it was all no thoughts, just vibes, as Iâm sure youâve heard.â â Claire Carusillo
âThe feeling comes back. The camera zooms in, the focus sharpens, charming little details emerge. I remember why I chose him.â â Heather Havrilesky
âThe week you passed away, I saw more Flexes than Iâd ever seen before. I like to think that was your way of saying hi, and that you were okay, as silly as that probably sounds.â â Molly Burford
âIâm not telling you to make the world better. Iâm just telling you to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To make your own work and take pride in it.â â Joan Didion
âAs it turns out, the ZZ Plant can withstand an impossible amount of neglect, but that does not mean that under better conditions, it will not choose to take up the potential offered to it and thrive.â â Jonny Sun

Let us leave you with this:
âI hope you have the courage to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, from anything that fails to inspire your mind. I hope you have the courage to grow, to change, to do things differently than what is expected of you, to step back and seek out the kinds of things that ignite passion and excitement within your very bones. But most of all, I hope you have the courage to forgive yourself for all the times you did not have the courage to believe that you deserved more than the kind of life you were settling for.â â Bianca Sparacino
No matter what happens in 2022, always remember that.
