This Is Your Reminder To Choose Yourself First
'Putting yourself first is not a selfish act—it is an act of self-love, of self-care.'
Welcome to the Collective World X Thought Catalog Newsletter. Collective World is a one-of-a-kind creative network powered by the minds and voices behind The Thought & Expression Company. We’re so glad you’re here.
This is your reminder to choose yourself first.
This is your reminder that you can love someone else with all of your heart but they cannot and should not be the primary source of your happiness. Because happiness is something internal—it starts and ends with you. That’s why it’s important that you allow yourself to figure out your passion, your purpose, outside of anyone else.
This is your reminder that you can be there for others but it’s important that you’re always there for yourself first. Putting yourself first is not a selfish act—it is an act of self-love, of self-care. You cannot give to others what you don’t even have for yourself. Please don’t empty your cup just to fill others’.
This is your reminder that if you aren’t happy with your life now, you have the power to change it. You can walk away from the job that makes you unhappy and start a new career. You can end the relationship that’s grown toxic. You have the ability to take the steps to find a new path—you are brave enough, too. You are allowed to seek happiness.
This is your reminder that you are allowed to demand better for yourself. You are allowed to say, “This is no longer serving me anymore, and so I will let it go.” You can walk away from people who no longer value you; you can leave a situation that isn’t giving you what you deserve. You can—and you absolutely should—set a standard of behavior that you’ll accept and refuse to deal with anything less.
This is your reminder to choose yourself first—because if you don’t, who will?
What We’re Reading This Week 📖💛
“I always thought that falling in love with someone else was the only way to get over you. But after many failed relationships, I now know that all I needed to do was to stop trying to fall out of love with you and instead fall in love with myself—a process that has been anything but linear. But then again, heartbreak is anything but linear, rather, a journey of different seasons, each with valuable reflections.” — Samantha Walisundara
“If my strange grief — of leaving home only to come home — starts to feel too big to hold, I sit in the front room of my childhood Chicago home with my father and drink black coffee, watching the sun stretch its fingers through the sycamore trees.” — Nina Li Coomes
“Ultimately, the dances we create as children can be lifelong tethers to people we lose common ground with over time.” — Hannah Jackson
“No Halloween tradition is cool, and no costume is really that clever. But that’s the beauty: The holiday presents a fleeting chance to stop taking ourselves so seriously.” — Faith Hill

Let us leave you with this:
“The love you have been searching for, you already carry inside your heart. How long will you wait before you demand what you deserve? How long will you wait before you ask for what is best? How long will you wait before you truly live? What does it take for you to begin?” — Charis Ed
